Learning Outside the Classroom (LOtC)

At MIS we recognise that quality learning experiences in ‘real’ situations have the capacity to raise achievement across a range of subjects and to develop better personal and social skills.

Our Learning Outside the Classroom programme is not only about what we learn but importantly how we learn and where we learn.

The MIS Learning Outside the Classroom programme aims:

• to provide inspiring activities that meet the needs of all MIS students
• to ensure that these activities offer firsthand experiences of the world outside the classroom, practical and relevant learning and progression across the key stages
• to provide a range of experiences that help develop key life skills, including personal learning, enquiry and thinking skills; and that deepen and enrich subject learning…

Learning Outside
the Classroom (LOtC)

At MIS we recognise that quality learning experiences in ‘real’ situations have the capacity to raise achievement across a range of subjects and to develop better personal and social skills.

Our Learning Outside the Classroom programme is not only about what we learn but importantly how we learn and where we learn.

The MIS Learning Outside the Classroom programme aims:

• to provide inspiring activities that meet the needs of all MIS students
• to ensure that these activities offer firsthand experiences of the world outside the classroom, practical and relevant learning and progression across the key stages
• to provide a range of experiences that help develop key life skills, including personal learning, enquiry and thinking skills; and that deepen and enrich subject learning

When these experiences are well planned, safely managed and personalised to meet the needs of every young person they can:

• Improve academic achievement
• Develop skills, self-confidence and independence in a widening range of environments.
• Make learning more engaging and relevant to young people.
• Develop active citizens and stewards of the environment.
• Nurture creativity.
• Stimulate, inspire, and improve motivation.
• Provide opportunities for informal learning through play.
• Provide challenge, problem solving, and the opportunity to take acceptable levels of risk.
• Improve young people’s attitudes to learning.

In addition to the MIS Co-curricular enrichment programme within school, we feel that it is important to offer our students a wide variety of school trips, both day and residential throughout the academic year.

We believe that every young person should experience the world beyond the classroom as an essential part of learning and personal development, whatever their age, ability or circumstances.

Our Learning Outside the Classroom programme is not only about what we learn but importantly how we learn and where we learn.

We know that our students will develop valuable skills which will be transferable beyond their time at school; they will learn how to communicate effectively, how to interact as part of a team and acquire organisational skills.

These are often the most memorable learning experiences, helping us to make sense of the world around us by making links between feelings and learning.

Learning outside the classroom is ‘the use of places other than the classroom for teaching and learning.’ This can include:

● Our school grounds and immediate local area
● Heritage & cultural sites – museums, galleries, and historic buildings
● Farms, zoos & gardens
● Sacred Spaces
● Outdoor Education & Field Studies Centres
● Overseas study and cultural tours
